The Healing Arts: Exploring Heart-Consciousness, Part 6; Discover With Others

By Russ Reina Understanding the concept of filters can have a considerable affect on not only how you see your life, but also how you experience it at any one time. We have much more control over our reality than we usually give ourselves credit. Try this. With others, go to a relatively quiet spot, in nature. Separate and find an isolated spot for yourself. Get comfortable and allow yourself to take in your environment. Experience sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. Just breathe it all in. Notice how many different sensations compete for your attention. Spend some time focusing on just one sense at a time. Pick a spot rich in variety. Start by scanning it, and then focus in on a particular piece. Zero-in on the tiniest part of what youre observing. Practice doing this with a number of sights, shifting from wide-shot to close-up and extreme close-up. See just how selective and precise you can be? Do something similar with each of your senses. Now, take in a few slow, deep breaths and shift your attention to your heart. Breathe in to it for a minute or so. Then, go back to the spot you were just focusing on. Through the filter of the consciousness of your heart this time, begin exploring what you had explored earlier. Just taking the time away from everyday reality opens up so much more of you on its own. Slowing down works its own magic. But when you set your intention on seeing through the eyes of your heart, a subtly richer world opens up to you as you learn to become more adept at recognizing and staying with that center. It may take a number of times to get the hang of it. Oddly enough, I find myself beginning a session on heart-consciousness by offering an intellectual, head-centered start that acts as a bridge to the concept which acts as a bridge to the experience. This is what I am doing with this series going back and forth from the intellectual to experiential. On the plus side, as I mentioned before, its more a matter of placing someone in the position of remembering something that lives inside them rather than starting from scratch. For me to teach heart-centered consciousness, in person, however, it is best if I am there myself. The second I do make the choice to shift my consciousness, something interesting happens; I tend to shut up. Its not that I dont have the words, its that I dont feel the drive to express them. Even in this moment, as I type I feel resistant to having to intellectualize and articulate what is essentially my present state of being. After seemingly interminable times sitting at the edge of the prairie in silence with the Lakota, I would begin to feel attuned to the person I was with in a connected way that did not require conversation. In so many ways, we just sat together experiencing the same thing (more on this kind of synchronization later). I would absorb the concept by being near it. That brings into play the power of exploring heart-consciousness with others. The more time I spent with the Lakota, the more present I became in the moment, and it had nothing to do with what I was taught. It is, conceptually, similar to the spark of life being passed from mother to offspring. In the presence of someone in this mode of consciousness, it becomes easier to access. The Dalai Lama is a great example. In all the films Ive seen of him, there are lines of people just waiting to be in his presence. He looks into each persons eyes, connects, and without saying anything of any substance, is just there with the person, and then the next and then the next. He laughs a lot. They cry a lot. I fantasize that the laughter is about the irony of people traveling so far to be with him to encounter something that has always lived inside them! Now that youve had a solitary experience of heart-consciousness, get together with one of the people with whom you have gone into nature. Go to a different spot. Sitting back to back, or within just a few feet of each other, repeat the sensory exercise that you just did solo. Do this silently for about fifteen minutes. Then, face each other and share your experiences. You will find what you will find, and its not my role to lead you on, but lets just say you will be getting a taste of how people in connection with their hearts come into better connection with themselves, and together more quickly can become in better connection with all things. Our next installment will expand on the concepts of working with others. Russ Reina shares over 35 years of experience in the healing arts through his web site http://mauihealingartist.com. Effects of Glyconutritional Supplements in Children With Bipolar Disorder

By Mary Zesiewicz, MD The following is a synopsis of a research study completed with 20 children diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, examining the benefits of glyconutritional supplements: Bipolar Disorder is diagnosed with increasing frequency in children and adolescents. Approximately 20% of all Bipolar patients experience their first episode during adolescence. Challenges in diagnosis include differentiation from ADD and other child behavioral disorders. The intensity and severity of mood swings and unprovoked behavioral outbursts create undue suffering for both the children and their families. Treatment includes both medications and therapy. Mood stabilizers and a newer class of medication, atypical antipsychotics, are used with increasing frequency. While meds are more of a last resort clinically, the option becomes higher priority when a youngster’s outbursts become a risk to hurt self or others, even accidentally. Caution with medication is always indicated, due to risk of side effects and the lack of research of many of these medications in children. The study examined the potential benefits of glyconutritional supplements for a period of 5 months. The results of this study were promising. Of 15 children who completed the study, 14 exhibited considerable improvement after 20 weeks on glyconutritional supplements. One child exhibited mild improvement on glyconutritional supplements. Children who experienced side effects from the medications for Bipolar Disorder displayed considerable improvement in their tolerability to medication. Examples included: near elimination in sedation from Risperdal and elimination of migraines while on Seroquel and Trileptal. One youngster who had been very fatigued from his medication regimen, which included Trileptal, Lexapro, Ambien, Abilify and Seroquel, experienced elimination of daytime fatigue by week 12. It was also clear to the researchers and study volunteers that the children looked happier, healthier, calmer and more stable as the study progressed. At the onset of this study, all parents expressed interest in the potential benefits of the supplements, particularly in offsetting side effects; however, all parents were clear that it had take quite along time for their children to become stable on their medications and they wished not to make changes in their medications prematurely. Many of the children had been hospitalized at least once. All families were highly invested in their childrens’ well-being and each felt their child’s condition was the single largest stressor in the family, including for the child who suffered from the condition. Our initial study results speak to the need for larger clinical trials over longer periods of time. Along with use of psychotropic medications in children, augmentation strategies with natural supplements, particularly glyconutritionals, warrant further consideration to improve childrens’ overall health, augment mood stabilizing effects of medications and improve tolerability of medications. Longer term studies may determine if medications could be successfully weaned, at least in part, over a longer period of time. Copyright 2006 INTEGRITY HEATH SOLUTIONS Mary F. Seeds: Why They Can Reproduce Cultivars Characteristics

By Patrick Desnoyers For a short anwser yes. But, its like the lottery. Your chance of reproducing the exact characteristic well known are minimal. To be in context, bonsai enthusiast often praise a specific species for its characteristics that adpat well to bonsai growing techniques. For example, small leaves and small internodes are quality sougth after. You can find these specific characteristics present in all japanese black pines (Pinus thunbergiana). But some growers have found a certain plant, that as even more pronunciated specific characteristics. From that plant, they have reproduce it by cloning technique such as cuttings or layering. This plant was attributed a name, wich is called cultivar. To continue our example, the common name of japanese black pine is Pinus thunbergiana, but a cultivar would be Pinus thunbergiana yatsubusa. This yatsubusa is a cultivar of the japanese black being known for its short needles and short internodes compare to the general japanese black pines. Another example of a cultivar would be Nishiki Matsu which is known to offer a japanese black pine with a cork like bark. But can growing bonsai from seeds reproduce these characteristics ? Yes and no. We say yes and no, because, you cannot reproduce 100% the same genetics as the known cultivar but you can reproduce another genetic sets that will have the same characteristics, ie: short needles or cork bark. Furthermore, you can produce an even more pronounced dwarf plant, or with leafed trees, a new color of leaves perhaps. Bonsai seeds, as in seeds from a bonsai tree dont exist. Growing seeds from a bonsai tree will not guarantee a bonsai. All seeds are tree seeds since a bonsai is fundamentally a tree. But some trees have been found to produce seeds that will mimic the parent characteristics. The yatsubusa tree seeds are one of them. Yatsubusa, which is japanese for witch broom, is a genetic disease caused by a fungi. When a tree is affected by this disease, it will produce dwarf shoots, and seeds produce will inherit the disease because it is genetics. Chinese elms, Trident maples and japanese black pines are three known species that have this yatsubusa disease. Avid full time hobby bonsai grower. Marriage Counseling Tips From A Couples Counselor

By David Foreman Marriages are said to be made in heaven. But whether ones life would be heaven-like after that, inside the wedlock, it depends entirely on how the couple feels and adjusts with each other while they live under the same roof as spouses. Many real-life experiences shows that marriages has not been always ideal and marriage-breakups is not so a rare occurrence. Why this happens? May be, it is the complexity of our personalities that is playing spoil sport here. Humans have the most intriguing of the personalities that it takes some effort from all of us to maintain the warmth in social relations in general, and marriages in particular. But, if a relation is not going fine and both the spouses are at the verge of taking a decision on whether to continue or stop this relation, wait for a moment. Discontent in a relation is not always the end of the road. There could still be some light at the end of the tunnel. And a professional marriage counseling help you reach there in the most practical way, even though it is not a promise. Studies show that it takes couples on an average seven years since marriage to consider attending a marriage counseling session if their relationship was not doing well. In other words, when they seek professional help driven by pain and frustration, their marriage may be already hanging by a thread. The health implications of the mental tension and pressure that the spouses withstand daily add to it. All these issues can be solved or alleviated in a big way if the couples take to couples counseling at an earlier stage itself than delaying it to a point of no return. A Center For Marriage Counseling tries to provide the people with an online resource capable of advising, guiding, and counseling the needy so that they may be able to link together the weakened or broken links of their troubled relationships with their spouses. Backed by a team of trained marriage counselors, this marriage counseling portal teaches its clients to understand and appreciate each other, to solve than aggravate a difference, listen to your partner, show love and care when the other person expects the most, the importance of sex life, and above all, the importance of communicating efficiently with your spouse. True, it requires the spouses will to set things straight, but marriage counseling professional helps you to reach the point of compromise quicker and in a practical way. Organic Cleaning – Why It’s Better

By Bruce Gors Whats harder to do than prepare to clean the house. You have to have rubber gloves, cleaners, and sometimes, masks in areas of poor ventilation. When cleaning organically, not only will you not have these problems, but you also will produce a cleaner and healthier environment. The materials that we use to clean homes currently are filled with harsh chemicals that do not agree with the skin. This is proven by the rashes and other skin irritations they can use if the skin has direct contact with the chemicals. Also, if you are exposed to the chemicals for too long in an enclosed area, they can be harmful to your health, as well. Yet, they do a wonderful job of cleaning homes, offices, etc. Some can take any stain out and others can keep a piece of wood conditioned and shiny for years. The question is, is the exposure really worth what you get out of it? Is it really worth it to have a meticulous home if you have to have adverse reactions to your health? There is an alternative. There has been a recent surge of organic products from fruits and vegetables to the very products you clean your home with. These products can produce the same results as those that are filled with man made chemicals, yet they are much less caustic to those using them. They have been made out of and are packaged in natural materials. These cleaning products are packaged in materials that are biodegradable. Therefore, when finished using the product, the packaging can be recycled or reused. The cleaning agents themselves are also natural, yet do just as good a job of cleaning. Their counterparts are, as already discussed, caustic to humans and their packaging material should be disposed of properly otherwise you run the risk of letting these caustic materials run into groundwater from the garbage dumpsite. All around, this is a superior cleaning product. In these days of wastefulness and concern of our natural resources, conserving where possible is always a good idea. Using these types of cleaning materials will not only satisfy you as to their ability to do their job, but will also pay for themselves over and over again in the fact that nothing about them will go to waste. Why Knowing Your Body Mass Index Number Is Crucial To Your Diet

By Gregg Hall When you are trying to lose weight, you will likely find that is a big numbers game, more so than any other factor in this society. Think about all the numbers there are to keep track of, how many pounds do you need to lose, in how many weeks do you need to lose it? How many inches is your waist and how many should it be? What is your body fat and what should it be? When you look at this is way, it is easy to see why so many people have trouble losing the weight they want to lose. There is one very good way to determine where you sit and where you should be sitting in terms of dieting. Even though there are a variety of numbers you are to keep track of, there is only one set that doctors seem most concerned with, and that is your body mass index (BMI). BMI, is a fairly new concept in America. The reality is it has been around for quite a while. The idea was created by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetlet. He was a Belgian mathematician and was extremely famous both then and now, because of the numbers systems he implemented in improving lives. This system has become the best measurement of determining if a patient is overweight or obese. Many people still do not quite understand what body mass index is and often become confused by it. To them, they see it as another system of numbers that have to document and remember. The body mass index contains the ratio of a persons height and weight. Implementing the formula allows physicians to determine if he or she is overweight or obese. While the word formula may scare you at first, determining your body mass index, is really not all that hard. First, you must determine your height in meters squared and your weight in kilograms. There are many websites available just for that reason, if you do not know how to determine those figures. After finding your metric height and weight, you divide your weight with your height. If you simply do not want to conduct this calculation, your physician should be able to provide you with a body mass index chart. The average healthy person should have a body mass index of somewhere between 18.5 through 25, depending on their height. Those that fall between 26 and 29 are considered overweight. A body mass index between 30 and 39 is considered to be obese and 40 or more is morbidly obese. As the BMI increases, so do the risk of serious health problems. Tummy Tucks – Your Choices And Costs

By Sandy Sizemore There is not just one overall tummy tuck price that is effective for everyone. There are various procedures that are capable of being applied to the patient. In the end, it is up to the patient’s needs, desires, budget as well as safety to determine what type of price is set by the tummy tuck procedure. There are several things that play a role in the tummy tuck prices and you may be surprised to learn that some are very much affordable options for many. Besides the factors of location and doctor experience, there are several various tummy tuck procedures available today that affect the cost of the surgery. Understanding what is the best procedure for you can help you to get an overall cost to the surgery, but it is likely that you will not know what the real cost of a tummy tuck is until you go in and see your doctor. This is generally because of the sheer specifics that are needed to be considered in this procedure. Options That May Be Provided One thing that may affect the cost of a tummy tuck is the various types that are offered today. You will play a role in determining which of these procedures will be done by talking with your doctor about the desired outcome that you have. Also, the specific body type and circumstances that you have will also play a role in what the choice will be. The goal of these surgeries will be the same and that is to provide you with a tighter, firmer tummy area, but how that happens depends on many factors. One key difference from one tummy tuck to the next is the size of the incision made. In one that offers just a small incision, such as that of just six inches, called a mini tummy tuck, there is a much smaller amount of risk and procedure to it. The largest incisions available are those that go all the way around the entire circumference of the waste. These are called a body lift and are not as often done. The most standard form is that of a traditional tummy tuck which is from hip to hip incisions are made. These differences do play a large role in what the final outcome will be for your body and your cost too. The more drastic the surgery is, and the more risk at play, the higher tummy tuck prices will be. The only true way for you to know what the cost of a tummy tuck for you will be is to actually go to the doctor and have them provide you with an idea of what will need to be done. He will then provide you with the cost. Since doctors vary so much in what they charge and your needs are much different than the needs of someone just around the corner, the tummy tuck prices you get are specific to you. Nations Apart – Arab Americans And Muslim Americans

By Marie Claire Bretana It is vital that we understand each other’s culture. A lot of tragedy stem from misunderstanding and the unwillingness to open up one’s mind to different perspectives. Take for instance the differences between an Arab American and a Muslim. The most common notion of Arab Americans is that they all practice Islam. A person who comes from an Arab-speaking nation is bound to be one, right? Wrong! What makes a person a follower of Islam is neither the place of origin nor the culture they grew up in. It is the true devotion to Allah. And what is ironic is that the Muslims in America are composed mostly of African Americans and Asian Americans. A large percentage of Arab Americans are actually Christians and not Muslims. Neither do they dress up like Aladdin nor look like one. Arab Americans are one of the most diverse ethnic group. They may have different physical attributes, but most of them have fair skin and light eyes and hair, genetic gifts from the people of Caucasia which is bordered on the south by Turkey and Iran. The darker skinned Arab Americans mainly came from the northern lands in Africa. And as more people from different races and cultures intermarry with each other, the Arab Americans have grown into a melting pot of people. In Arab culture you give great respect to members who represent authority. It would be impolite, disrespectful to give one direct consistent eye contact. So they may look, then look away, they look, then they look away. Another possible source of confusion is Arab names. Arab and Muslim names are spelled in a variety of ways in English because some Arabic sounds do not exist in the English alphabet. Arab names typically have four parts however most forms in America only allow space for two or three names. Due to these and other cultural factors the same name maybe spelled differently or different names may appear in different documents for the same individual. Famous personalities such as Paula Abdul and Christa MacAuliffe, the teacher in the Challenger explosion, are Arab Americans. In fact, Arab Americans have been documented to have begun migrating to the States since the 1800s. One can therefore say Arab Americans are very much a part of the thread that makes up the colorful tapestry of American society. The Muslims, on the other hand, are not as diverse as the Arab Americans. A great majority have African and Asian roots. Instead of turbans (which the Sikhs, an ethnic group from northern India, wore) Muslim men wear round caps and Muslim women wear head scarves. Both genders wear long clothing that covers most of their bodies. Modesty is important in Islam. There are many beliefs and practices in Islam that non-Muslims might misinterpret as suspicious behavior. In Islam, men and women follow different sets of rules of behaving in public. However, this does not mean the women are oppressed or that the men are tyrants. The men and women pray in different parts of the mosque in order to commune closer with Allah and focus more on their prayers. This is also in accordance with the value of modesty which is held in high esteem by Muslims. Shoes are removed before entering the area dedicated to prayer. Avoid stepping on the prayer rug with your shoes. It is inappropriate to interrupt someone in prayer. Typically one will walk behind or far ahead of the person in prayer or wait till he or she is finished before they pass or approach. Respect and modesty for some Muslims may mean not touching someone of the opposite sex even in the case of a handshake. It is better to let the person of the opposite sex extend his or her hand as a signal that it is okay to shake hands. It may also be inappropriate to enter a home if only someone of the opposite sex is present. If circumstances permit, return when a resident of the same gender is available. An individual may wish to be interviewed apart from their families. Individuals may wish to be interviewed apart from their families to save face. Publicity and public scenes may also cause unnecessary embarrassment and humiliation. The proper protocol when offered a drink or a snack would be to accept it. Saying “No thank you” even if said in a very polite way can be offensive. Accept the offering even if you choose not to eat or drink it. This is considered more acceptable than rejecting their hospitality. In cases involving police searches extra scrutiny should be the result of behavioral characteristics rather than physical appearance or attire. Indiscriminate touching of a head covering or body may be perceived as offensive. Be aware that a male staring at or touching a woman is considered offensive. If a search of a woman’s scarf is warranted, police officers must explain why she needs to remove it. Public searches of the head scarf are viewed as humiliating and violates one’s religious tenets. It is better to have a female officer bring her into a private room and ask her to remove the scarf herself. Paying attention to details like these will go a long way in building rapport and cooperation with the Arab and Muslim American communities.
